Ray was created by amigo & amigo for the 2018 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Chiayi County. The 6m high tornado-like sculpture invited audience members to play 3 drums which each sent pulses of light firing toward to the top of the piece and spiralling down its body.

Circumstances of the festival meant that Ray needed to be designed and produced in less than 1 month. In order to achieve this, after preparing the previously designed structure for fabrication in Taiwan, I travelled with amigo & amigo’s Creative Director to Taiwan to finish the production process on-site. During the 11 days on-site, we worked day and night with one or two assistants and were able to finish the piece a matter of hours before our departure was due. In the final few days, alongside the final physical production stages, I designed and programmed a light show which gave the audience periods of direct control over the piece, coupled with periods of passive animations in which I played with colour and the piece’s form to give it alternate effects and meanings.
